How to Edit AI Output So It Stops Reading Like AI Output

The standard advice for editing AI text is "add your voice" or "make it your own." This is not useful advice. It's like telling someone who can't parallel park to "feel the geometry of the space." True, but not actionable.

Here's what actually helps.

Pass 1: Cut the throat-clearing

AI almost always starts with something that isn't the piece. "In today's rapidly changing landscape..." or "It's important to consider..." or a sentence that explains what the next paragraph will discuss rather than just discussing it.

Delete the first sentence of every paragraph and see if the paragraph still works. It usually does, and often it's better. Do the same for the first paragraph of the whole piece.

Pass 2: Find every weasel phrase and decide

Go through the draft and highlight: it's worth noting, it's important to consider, some experts argue, in many cases, one could argue, it depends on a variety of factors.

For each one, make a decision: either commit to the claim the phrase was hedging, or delete the sentence entirely. The only option that's not available is leaving the phrase in.

If you can't commit to the claim, that's information. It might mean the paragraph is filler. It might mean you need to do more thinking before writing it. Either way, the weasel phrase was hiding a real problem.

Pass 3: Attack the transitions

Furthermore, additionally, in conclusion, it is evident that, this highlights the importance of — these are the connective tissue AI reaches for because it was trained on text that uses them. Real writers use them rarely if at all.

Delete every one you find. Then, if the paragraphs don't connect without the transition, rewrite the end of one paragraph or the beginning of the next so they connect naturally. If they connect fine without it, leave it deleted.

Pass 4: Read it as a skeptic

Read through once assuming nothing is right. Ask: what claims are made here without support? What would I push back on if someone said this to me? Where does the logic not actually follow?

AI is very good at sounding reasonable while making moves that don't quite hold up to scrutiny. It phrases things confidently whether or not they're true or well-supported. Your job in this pass is to find those places.

Pass 5: Read it out loud

This catches rhythm problems that you miss reading silently. If you take a breath in the wrong place, the sentence is too long. If three sentences in a row end on the same beat, you'll hear it. If a phrase feels awkward in your mouth, it'll feel awkward in the reader's head.

This is the pass where you also notice whether it sounds like you. If it doesn't — and often it won't — this is where you make it. Not by trying to imitate your own voice but by finding the sentences that feel wrong and rewriting them until they don't.

None of this is fast. But done consistently, it turns AI text into something you'd be comfortable attaching your name to. Which is the actual goal.
