Short-Form Writing Is Where AI Falls Apart the Fastest
Paradoxically, AI is worse at short writing than long. A tweet, a bio, a subject line — these expose every weakness at once.
The instinct when using AI for short writing is that it should be easier. Less to write means less to go wrong. But the opposite is true: the shorter the piece, the more every word matters, and the harder it is for AI to produce something that works.
Why short writing is harder for AI
In a long piece, the weaknesses distribute. One generic sentence in a 1,500-word essay doesn't sink the whole thing. One generic sentence in a six-word subject line is the entire subject line.
Short writing depends on specificity and surprise. A tagline that sounds like every other tagline is worse than no tagline. A bio that says "passionate professional with expertise in driving results" tells the reader nothing and costs credibility. The shorter the format, the more generic phrasing punishes you.
AI defaults to the statistically safe middle — language that would be acceptable in many contexts. Short writing needs language that's optimized for one specific context, person, and purpose. That tension is basically unsolvable for a model without very precise prompting and a lot of iterations.
The formats where this shows up most
Email subject lines. The AI version is usually accurate but not compelling. "Following up on our conversation" instead of "The pricing question from Tuesday."
Social media bios. The AI version lists capabilities. A good bio makes you want to follow someone. Those are different.
LinkedIn summaries. AI produces extremely complete summaries that say nothing memorable. The formula is visible from the first sentence.
Headlines. AI can write accurate headlines. Accurate isn't the same as good. The headline's job is to make someone stop — AI doesn't know what makes a specific reader stop.
What actually helps
For short writing, AI is better used as a brainstorm partner than a writer. Generate fifteen options, take the two phrases that are interesting even if the whole option doesn't work, combine them, and rewrite from there.
This is faster than writing fifteen options yourself and produces better output than taking the AI draft and editing it. The AI's value is volume and variation, not quality. Use it accordingly.
